It’s the season of love, though, methinks one doesn’t need ‘a’ season to love.
Love is all-encompassing and all-pervasive. It’s like breathing, no? It’s life itself.
Coming from a Piscean, what more can one expect to hear.
And we all know of love to take the form of different relationships.
Think about it, there are so many forms of love.
Parent-child and its various combinations in terms of mother-daughter, father-son or the other way around too.
Sibling love, a bond second to none.
Love in marriage, or outside of it.
Love thy neighbor, seldom as it may be.
Lovers like friends, an achievement.
Friends like lovers, a delight.
Same-sex love, wear it with pride.
Self-love, the newest buzzword.
And whilst they are all true to their relationships and to the emotion in question, to my mind, they all come with some conditions, some expectations, even if for the self, and hence, some disappointments.
Coz it’s so difficult to be selfless in love, it’s often seen as being too good to be true.
If I was to talk about love, for me, the epitome of it would be the four-legged furry kind.
Having been a pet parent for most of my life, I have had the privilege and honor of experiencing love in its truest form.
There’s so much and more that’s been written about the cognitive intelligence and emotional capability of dogs, and science continues to want to crack the code on this one.
But really, dogs are truly madly deeply sincerely man’s best friend.
It’s love that gives you a sense of purpose.
A responsibility. A soulful experience.
It’s love that hurts.
love that uplifts you like no other.
One can drown in the depth of their deep brown eyes.
The fastened wag of the tail upon them seeing you come back home.
The cuddle in the bed each morning, or the afternoon snuggle.
The fun times when you play fetch.
The sense of trust with each visit to the vet, them feeling secure that you will do them no harm.
The joy when you go for a spin the neighbourhood.
The sense of pride as they walk beside you.
The feeling of ownership as they drive past the roads that lead home.
The glory of the sun on their gorgeous faces.
The eyes that speak a thousand words.
The moment when you just know they want a loo break, or hungry for a lil bit more food.
The glum face which says I’m not feeling well enough today.
There are so many pawsibilities of this love, that it’s beyond magic.
My new year resolution has always been to be at least half-a-good human being as my dog thinks I am, and that keeps me motivated each day.
As a first time doggie parent, you can learn this love, and believe you me, it doesn’t take long, usually the first look is enough and it only builds from thereon.
You can learn to love again, having suffered the loss of a dear pup and it only feels purer each time.
But you can never un-love this love.
And therein lies the power of love.
It’s so pawsitive. It’s actually therapy.
I dedicate this love note to Simba, who took a piece of me with him.
And to the very handsome Zac, the keeper of my heart.
