South Tyrol: Europe’s Hidden Wonder

Mohit Gupta

If you can’t pick between Austria, Switzerland or Italy for your next European getaway, don’t worry, here’s the solution to your travel woes. Nestled between the stunning ranges of the Italian Alps and the rocky Dolomites is a captivating fairy-tale land that is simply like no other, South Tyrol.

Also known as Südtirol or Alto Adige, this picturesque northern Italian province is a unique amalgamation of Italy and the two other countries it borders Austria and Switzerland. The reason for this is because South Tyrol was once under Austrian rule for centuries. It was only in 1948, after World War 1 that it was annexed by Italy and created into an autonomous province.

With expansive views of mountain ranges, crystal-clear lakes and sprawling vineyards, South Tyrol is a hidden beauty that yearns to be explored. Everything about the landscape of this province captures your attention. At first, you wouldn’t imagine that you’re in Italy. After all, when people think of said Mediterranean paradise, they think of Rome, Venice or Amalfi. Not rocky ranges of mountains and old crumbling castles.

There is much to love when it comes to this alpine region. The lofty mountains and luscious green valleys can create such a contrast, but that’s what adds to its charm. The whole province has a very distinct Mediterranean charm and yet rustic Austrian architecture.

One can go on overnight hikes through the 26 mountain ranges that make up the UNESCO Heritage-listed Dolomites during the summer months. You can also visit the emerald waters of Lago di Braies that is surrounded by limestone peaks and pine forests, or the Rainbow Lakes of Lago di Carezza that reflect the imposing Latemar range. Be sure to go earlier in the morning so that you can watch the sunrise and beat the crowds of tourists.

If hiking the steep peaks of the alpine ranges isn’t enough of an adrenaline rush for you, how about paragliding over South Tyrol? Witness the snowy Alps, the rocky Dolomites and the quaint towns down below as you sail peacefully through the sky.

During the colder months of the year, the valleys and mountains are blanketed under thick snow, making the Dolomites home to several ski resorts. So, be it biking or hiking the mountain ranges during the summer or skiing down the steep slopes, no matter the season, there is always time for adventure activities while visiting South Tyrol.

While South Tyrol itself is a hidden gem, it also houses a contemporary jewel like no other— the Mirror Houses. Situated just outside the city of Bolzano is a stunning property that consists of two striking houses that truly reflect the beauty of their surroundings.

Designed by renowned local architect Peter Pichler, the Mirror Houses are two luxury vacation homes that are built with, just as the name suggests, mirrored glass. Surrounded by apple orchards and the Dolomites, the houses are constructed facing the east and are slightly elevated to provide guests with a better view.

The mirrored glass, that is used to panel the exteriors, allows both units to blend into the idyllic country surroundings. With the breath-taking panoramic dwellings mirrored on the very walls of the houses, whether you’re inside the house or lounging outside, you’re in for a visual treat.

Each unit of the Mirror Houses is designed to let as much natural light in as possible. With big skylights and the interiors of the house being all white, it makes the units feel a lot bigger and more open than it already is.

Most of the minimalistic styled furniture that makes up the kitchen, living room and bedrooms, is sourced from around Italy itself. In the bedroom, directly above the bed is a huge window on the ceiling. This makes one feel as if they are sleeping under the star, outside amongst nature.

Both of the houses come with a shared garden space, along with a swimming pool that guests can enjoy during the summer months. Everything about the Mirror Houses, from the design and location, ensures that you have maximum privacy while being surrounded by nature and able to avail of all the modern luxuries.

So, if you are someone who loves being immersed in nature and stretching your legs for a hike or two, add South Tyrol to your list of European destinations to visit once you get the chance to travel again. And if you are planning on having a relaxing and rejuvenating getaway, we suggest checking out the Mirror Houses as your accommodation.
