Single on Valentines Day

Poonam Chatterjee

The season of love and romance has made its entry already and most of us simply cannot wait to welcome February 14, 2021 – Valentine’s Day! Most of us do not know this but Valentine’s Day has been celebrated from as early as the 14th century. Furthermore, this festival of love or social custom, whichever you choose to call it, has its origin in the ancient Roman festival of Lupercalia that was subsequently accommodated as a Christian event known as St. Valentine’s Day by the 5th century. But wait, what’s the point of going into the history of the event?

Well, for starters, the point is to try and imbibe the fact that Valentine’s Day has been around for a pretty long time. Many centuries, in fact; and it feels kind of awe-inspiring to think that the trend of having a special day for your romantic relationship is not something relatively new. With that being said, the fact that is most logically deductible is that single people have almost always had to battle with the crisis that comes for them on the 14th of February. However, one cannot be too sure that its completely fair for all people without partners to feel left out on a day we celebrate in the name of love!

Let’s get straight to the point: It is okay to be single. Moreover, single people should have the privilege of exploring Valentine’s Day and having fun like everyone else. There are countless single people out there on any Valentine’s Day just as there are couples. So, why should couples have all the fun? There are a host of different ideas that single people could try out on Valentine’s Day to make it unique and memorable at the same time.

If you are single recognize your singularity. Acknowledge the fact that you have been battling it out in life almost single-handedly and pat yourself to that realization. Learning to appreciate the self is the most potent form of love that exists on the planet; and what could be a better way to spend the day of love than loving yourself? Watch a movie, buy that hoodie you have always wanted to or indulge in your favorite cuisine all day long.

If you really do not want to spend the day alone, you can plan a party! Don’t worry; you don’t have to call all the couples you know to this celebration! Instead, call up your friends who are still single just like you. The world is filled with single people just like couples. It’s just that they elude social gaze as they do not make much of a show of their singularity as couples do on social media!

Take your family out on a lunch or dinner. Your aged parents or siblings would surely like to spend some good time with you amidst your busy work life. You can choose to treat them to some exquisite fine dining experience they will remember for a lifetime. Apart from being unique, this would end up being a memorable way to spend Valentine’s Day.

You do not need to be someone’s valentine to gift him or her chocolates! Make a list of all the people whom you truly consider as having had a positive influence on your life. The list of those people may include your father, your friend, your distant cousin, your schoolteacher and even your ex-boss. Pack chocolates for all of them and send it along with a card expressing your gratitude for their presence (if only for a while) in your life. You will be surely surprised by the amount of love you receive in return.

Let love know no bounds; let love come back to you this Valentine’s Day.
