Of Sand Castles & Culture-Hungry Souls: When Rajasthan Beckons, We Go!

Mohit Gupta

They say, once you visit Rajasthan, there is no staying away from it’s marvels. I say, when you go to Rajasthan, it is best to only revel in and unfurl one city at a time. When there is so much to see in each place, it can take days on end to truly experience and discover what every culture has to offer. And Rajasthan is a kaleidoscopic multitude of cultures and experiences; so one city at a time does it best for your every-exploring souls!

The Thar always did excite me; of course, the vehicular Thar also does from time to time. But jokes apart, the desert is expansive, one to steal your sleep when you spend a night in it. On the eastern border of the desert sits Jodhpur, the Blue City of Rajasthan and a large princely portion of Rajasthan; the primary settlements of the Marwar communities. Pale blue hues and winding mazes of streets make Jodhpur a marvel to explore for visitors; amazing at every turn. So while you visit the magnificent Mehrangarh Fort, that still dominates the town with its impressive backdrop to views of the old town right below it; full of bazaars selling local handicraft and street food to tease your tastebuds.

Oh well, you can tease me all you want, but I will never be bored of scaling winding streets full of spices, local fare and handicrafts to play with and experience. There is something about Rajasthani skill that touches the soul: whether it is a piece of furniture, an artifact, a sightseeing spot or simply insanely-cooked food. Somewhat labyrinthine, these streets with their bustling spice fumes and aromatic foods, coupled with shiny and historic antique finds; oh, my heart swells with yearning.

So while I explore the gateway to the Thar, I’d definitely be anchoring down at Mihir Garh, another one of my bucket-list specials. While I do enjoy being part of the hustle and bustle at any vacation, I prefer having my stay a little away, because nothing beats being close to but just far enough from the crowd to enjoy mornings and evenings of peace, quiet and tranquil. And Mihir Garh, with its fortress-like location, being perched on a sand mound at the edge of the desert does it just as perfectly. A luxurious boutique property located in the wilderness of Jodhpur’s glorious entrance to the desert. Made just of mud and wood, this spectacular luxury property comprises nine suites divided between two floors; oh yes, private it is. Blending with desert hues, the interiors of the rooms are simple yet engaging with well sized pools (plunge pools for the ground floor rooms and jacuzzis for the upper floored rooms) and sunset or sunrise facing balconies.

With jeep safaris, desert walks, bishnoi village visits and various picnics are in store for you at Mihir Garh, owned by a keen horseman himself. Get ready to hear some exciting marwari tales while you put down your bags here! So while I count down months to the winter, when I can enjoy this city in all it’s swept up glory, make sure to plan your trips too!
