When you think of Jaipur, you think of havelis, fried local food, pampering hotels, palaces and a few tigers not far along. Little do we know, Jaipur is the perfect kaleidoscope of experiences, whether you are looking for history, luxury, adventure or plain old town sightseeing. A food paradise, a heritage classic and a wildlife gateway; all in one, the Pink City.
From being known for houses made of terracotta-pink, lime-plastered buildings to now a well-planned city with vibrant bazaars, chaos for the soul and some stunning attractions around, Jaipur holds its charm from days bygone.
Look forward to peppercorns of crumbling forts, an astonishing City Palace (among others, of course!), ancient temples in the vicinity and the roar of the occasional tiger from Ranthambore when you are out on road trips. Don’t forget to pamper yourself with a few full-fat meals that touch your soul or some historic fill with a visit to the museums and attractions here. There is so much to do, time will never be enough!
I’d stay begin with a visit to the Hawa Mahal – widely known as the Palace of Winds. Once you enter, you will know why – there are 953 windows! Did you know that? Head to the Jantar Mantar & the City Palace – history, history, a fill of the yesteryears.
Stop for a break in the Old Town Market – I mean hot piping kachoris, some chaat and a wholesome amount of buttermilk to get you through the rest of the day (with a slight snooze). The evening should only be enjoyed with true Rajasthani pampering – yes, massages, lavish dinners and a night of gallivanting to new restaurants – there are too many to choose from.
I remember, years and years ago, a visit to Pushkar and Ajmer blew me away. The Pushkar Lake, reached only through winding lanes filled with markets and mesmerizing aromas of battered food. The odd camel moving around (yes, Rajasthan and its camels); choose from an adventure ride or simply a basic camel ride. And Ajmer, with the legendary Mayo College (till date, I do believe that it’s an Indian Hogwarts!). On your way back, don’t forget to stop at the Sarvadia Sweet House; after all, how can you leave Pushkar without digging into melt-in-your-mouth malpuas!
When you get back to your hotel, which is of course the Shahpura House, adorned with courtyards, intricate architecture and lavish decorations – a true Rajasthan experience. Meticulously maintained with a clear blue pool, eye-charming mirror work which complements the way the ceiling shimmers. A true Shekhawati décor and service that exudes pampering, this hotel is a dream right in the streets of Jaipur.
A dinner or few will keep you wanting for more – tantalizing spices, whether you choose to order A La Carte, or a Thali; choice is yours. Enjoy a few meals with folk dancers entertaining you on the side lines, and then head down to the bar for a few drinks and a game of billiards. The spa offers an array of services, including a variety of ayurvedic treatments, to relieve sinuses and bodily stresses. When its time to go, and you don’t have time to give to the markets, their in-house store is your gateway to quick souvenir shopping – block print clothes designed by the owner and tailored by women in an NGO that she runs.
Why go anywhere, when Shahpura offers the best of Rajasthani experiences the right way? Jaipur is and will always remain a kaleidoscope of experiences; newer and newer, but never leaving the yesteryears!
