Georgian Landscapes: The Home to the Caucasus Beckons A Visit!

Mohit Gupta

We’ve all heard of Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan lately. What with their excellent european landscapes and through the night party fevers. Not to miss out, their cooked to perfection lamb kebabs and famous pilafs. But, did you ever wonder what goes beyond the nightlife and extravagance?

We all need some peace, quiet and soul-searching. A place where we can truly breathe. And I have found just the country for it. Georgia: home to culture, forests, lakes, mountains and nature in all its powerful glory. With influences from Greece, Iran and Jerusalem, the people of Georgia make the country a perfect detour from your silk route. I would begin in Tbilisi, because there’s no place like the capital of a country to begin from. Full of heritage at every step, winding cobbled streets, Tbilisi is located at the banks of the Mtvari River. It is the perfect fusion of art, culture, heritage, society and small town charm. Apart from the town’s churches, sightseeing vantage points and the many art stores to explore, I would make sure I visit the Narikhala before heading on for the rest of my tour of the god-given country. Best described as a fortress, the Narikhala is situated right between the botanical garden and the sulfur baths, and overlooks the city with dramatic height.

I’d definitely head to Kazbegi next because there’s no way one can miss the drive along the Caucasus towards a mountain town for the ultimate scenic experience. A design hotel marks the best spot to put down bags in Kazbegi and just take in the valley and all that comes with it. Onwards to Borjomi, the spa town. Imagine pine trees all around, natural water springs marking in between all the trees. Borjomi is known worldwide for its natural volcanic spring water; now that’s something to look forward to!

After a rejuvenating stay in Borjomi, I would end my trip with the most dramatic stay on my list. Yes, I plan my trips according to the hotels I want to experience, and it has been the best way so far!

The Eco House Merisi is located in the little town of Silibauri. The hotel itself only comprised two cottages, so you understand why it piqued my interest; privacy, exclusivity and the perfect location, overlooking the village of Merisi. Simply constructed, these cottages have only one distinct feature. They are located at a height of 850m over the village and the scent of fresh mountain air, crisp volcanic waters and a breathtaking view at any time of the day, is the only USP we ever need. Yes, this is the main reason I want to explore the home of the Caucasus!

Once I have had my days of fill from the mountains and this scenic location, it will be time to drive back to Tbilisi, and bid adieu to this beautiful country. But not before we sample some wines from Kakheti, a short road trip from Tbilisi and the reason why Georgia prides itself as a wine country. Monasteries hidden among the deciduous trees of the region, wineries to explore and lunches to be had with the locals. After this, we will have truly experienced Georgia!

PS: The best way to get around is to drive, so make sure your international licenses are handy. After all, we would rather drive than be driven around Ladakh too, right?
