Sitting 1600 metres above sea level is a little gemstone in the village of Kaser Devi overlooking the magnificent Nanda Devi Range of the Himalayas. A breath-taking drive away from the town of Almora, this scenic region of mountains, valleys, forests and lakes is accessible only by road on a slightly tricky track which is then completed by foot closer to the property.
Conceptualised by Zowa Architects, celebrated architects of Sri Lanka, the project was further executed by Kshitij Aggarwal who then stayed with the getaway for two years and led it to its completion.
Built on the cornerstone of natural texture, organic elements and simplistic materials, the quality of the soil and land was evaluated and restored before work commenced on this out-of-the-ordinary project. The cement structures at the Kumaon’s were encased in bamboo and hand strung together with copper wiring, offering the rustic touch, feel and energy to the interiors as well as the exteriors.
Offering only the local cuisine on their menu, the Kumaon prides itself for engagement with local culture and produce while steering away from the ‘one size fits all’ strategy of most hospitality ventures where the aim to please a multitude of guests is maintained.
A quaint 10-room establishment, the Kumaon experience is truly unlike any other. The highlight of the property is definitely its cantilevered dining area which boasts of floor-to-ceiling windows and an unobstructed view of the Himalayas.
While chatting to a guest who recently visited this beautiful homelike structure, we were able to absorb some added knowledge and know-how of the project. The rooms are constructed in pairs, atop one another, to not only reduce the impact of the development but to also reduce the bulk of building overall. It focused on creating elements on-site with special care towards self-design and fabrication.
With silence and privacy being the goal of this experience, the Kumaon encourages modest indulgences like day-dreaming and star gazing. This thoughtfully created experience is a definite recommendation from Nooks & Valleys!
